India beat Pakistan in opener

Set to score 195 to win, Pakistan managed 183-6 in the allotted overs.

The series is being organised under the banner of ‘Aman Ki Asha’ — a joint venture of the Jang Group of Newspapers and Times of India.

Even a brave effort from Asad Leghari (66) failed to earn victory for Pakistan. Asad struck four sixes and three boundaries in his 45-ball knock. His innings kept Pakistan hopes alive till the last over. However, once he got out it was curtains for the home team.

The hosts started the run chase in cracking fashion, reaching 45 off just four overs. Adeel struck five fours and two sixes up front to set things rolling. Junaid Khan (24) also played well.

Pakistan, however, lost some crucial wickets when the score reached 136-2 in the 14th over. Alamgir, on 20, had to return to the pavilion after injuring his leg. Sohail Khan (0) and captain Fayyaz Khan (0) also lost their wickets in quick succession. When Sher Ali (10) got out, Pakistan required 36 of 13 balls with five wickets in hand.

Earlier, India smashed 194-5 on a track assisting stroke-makers. Sarang Chafale (35), Ravi Patil (34), Tushar Paul (31) and Abdul Khalek (28) played well for India. Khalek scored his 28 off just 12 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. Rashid Ali picked up 2-13 while Rana Ashfaq finished with 1-18.

Both teams will now figure in a one-day series starting with the opening match at the same venue on Sunday (tomorrow).
